You May Have Your Father’s Hearing

A wide smile, freckles, long legs and …hearing loss?  Yes, it seems we can inherit many of our parents’ traits! While we have known for years that different conditions such as baldness, high blood pressure, and poor eyesight can have genetic origins, recent studies have revealed more information into the genetic causes of hearing loss.

A recent HealthyHearing.com article details the findings from a National Institute of Health supported research study.  This study indicates that almost 70 different genes in our DNA have been identified as responsible for hereditary hearing loss.  Researchers expect this number to increase as more gene candidates are explored.

While the majority of hearing loss is attributed to noise exposure, it is becoming more and more commonplace to see individuals who have some degree of genetic hearing loss.  While we can’t change our genes, we CAN have our hearing screened regularly.  Early detection leads to early treatment!
